Different Types of Lighting in the Kitchen
The way your kitchen is lit can have a big impact on its appearance, feel, and function. There are three main types of kitchen lighting: ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. We’ll break these down below:
Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting is the main light source for your kitchen. This can look different in many homes and impacts the overall look and feel of the space.
The default kitchen lighting for our Frontier RTM Custom Home features downlights (or recessed lights) that are concealed and installed directly into the ceiling, as well as a centred hanging light.
Other types of ambient light fixtures include surface lights, track lights, and wall-mounted lights.
If you want a fresh, modern look for your kitchen, our default recessed lights are a great choice. If you prefer a more sophisticated and timeless look, go for a classic brass or crystal chandelier. Wall sconces, stained glass chandeliers, or floor/table lamps help create a more cozy, vintage vibe!
Task Lighting
Task lights are used where the kitchen magic happens: over the counter, in the cooking areas, under cabinets, above the sink, etc. Implementing task lights allows you to work safely in your kitchen without needing to keep the “big” lights on all day, which many homeowners prefer in the evenings. These lights are more about function than style but can still contribute to the overall ambience of your kitchen.
Some options for task lights include LED light strips, recessed lights, and hanging lights.
Warm, yellow task lights are great for homeowners who want their kitchens to feel cozier. Installing coloured LED strips above the counters can create a more modern-futuristic feeling!
Accent Lighting
Accent lighting is used to enhance certain areas of your home that deserve more attention. Wall art, collectibles, fine china, or focal features like natural wood and metal ceiling tiles all benefit from accent lighting, adding more dimension to the overall space.
You can use wall sconces, track lighting, spotlights and picture lights to pinpoint which areas of your kitchen you want to enhance!
